This is Deputy. At first glance you would think this 5 month old lab mix was just an ordinary fun loving puppy. But he's not...he's a $6,000 dog. San Bernardino Sheriff Deputy Mitchell rescued the puppy she later named Deputy from a home in Muscoy about two months ago after she noticed something wrong with his legs.
"It was most likely hit by a vehicle in the area and just never got the medical treatment it needed."
This puppy named Deputy was brought to the Animal Care Wellness Center in San Bernardino for evaluation. Chief medical officer, Dr. Marc DiCarlo says he had severe damage to his hind legs.
"Both his rear limbs had multiple fractures and because he's such a young dog and his growth plates aren't closed yet. He needed some very specialized surgery to repair him."
The extensive hospital stay and multiple surgeries would cost as much as $6,000 and euthanasia was considered. But, Dr. Holt says the charitable surgeon donated his skills and has repaired most of the damage. Now, the puppy has another hurdle to jump.
"The next step for him is just placing him in a good home. I mean the biggest thing is making sure that people are responsible... that whoever adopts him is loving and responsible for taking care of Deputy in the furure."
Dr. Holt says Deputy can walk, but his orthopedic condition may require additional care in the future. She said " we are always ready and willing to help. We love him." He is available for adoption at PoochMatch.com.
Good news May 21, 2010: this great puppy has been adopted!
